This is Ulysses S. Grant's oldest son Fred, who inherited his father's puppy face but none of his talent.
Fred was one of four Police Commissioners in New York City in the 1890s, alongside Theodore Roosevelt, who thought he was boring.

I hope you haven't abandoned this blog. Don't remember how I heard about it in the first place, but I've read every entry with delight. Please don't give up -- if you do, your avid followers will not only be distraught, but we'll never know what to think about Taft!
ReplyDeleteI agree. I have really enjoyed this blog. Hopefully it will keep going. I am sure it can often be a slog getting through some of these books -- but once you hit the first Roosevelt your are entering a whole new era.

ReplyDeleteHave you taken a break from this noble endeavor? I just came across your blog today and was motivated to follow in your footsteps as I'm sure you've intrigued so many others. I finished McCullough's John Adams last year and think I'll get going with another biography ASAP. Are you going to finish the race you've started or have life's circumstances set you on another path?
